CITY OF BROWNSVILLE TO RECEIVE $10 MILLION IN COVID-19 RELIEF FUNDING THROUGH STATE OF TEXAS
City Leadership to Discuss Fund Allocation in Weeks to Come
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (May 12, 2020) — The City of Brownsville announces today that it was allocated a total of $10.2 million ($10,209,375) in relief funding distributed through the Texas Division of Emergency Management to help cover the costs associated with the impacts of COVID-19, coronavirus.
Brownsville is eligible to receive an initial distribution of 20 percent of the total allocation — about $2 million ($2,041,875) — after the State certifies the City’s application. The remainder of the allocated funds will be reimbursed based on eligible expenditures related to the health emergency through the end of 2020.
“As we continue to serve our residents and commit to recovering together as a community, receiving these funds will help us plan for the foreseeable future,” said Mayor Trey Mendez. “In the coming weeks, I will discuss with City leadership on how to best allocate these funds to provide immediate relief where our community needs it the most.”
The fund is provided through the Coronavirus Relief Fund of the U.S. Department of Treasury’s CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, which provides payments to State, Local, and Tribal governments navigating the impact of COVID-19. The State of Texas has received approximately $11 billion from the U.S. Treasury for direct coronavirus-related expenses.
