CITY OF BROWNSVILLE SELECTED AS ONE OF 12 COMMUNITIES TO RECEIVE RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR IMMIGRANT-INCLUSIVE COVID-19 RELIEF MEASURES

New American Economy to Provide Research Specifically Tailored to Each Community

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (May 14, 2020) — The City of Brownsville has been selected as one of 12 local governments and organizations nationwide that will receive tailored research support to inform emergency response efforts that will include all residents, regardless of immigration status.

New American Economy (NAE), a bipartisan research and advocacy organization, announced today that Brownsville has been selected to receive regionally-customized research reports that will help identify the gaps in service provision and challenges that are specific to immigrant communities. The research will support ongoing efforts in selected communities to make sure response efforts reach all residents.

“We embrace our diverse bi-national economy, enriched by the immigrant experience,” said Noel Bernal, City Manager. “This research is critical — it will help us learn more about how we can continue to ensure no one is left behind in our COVID-19 relief measures and future emergency response planning.”

Other communities and organizations chosen to receive the research include Denver, Colo.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Portland, Ore.; Saint Paul, Minn.; San Jose, Calif.; Tulsa, Okla.; Detroit, Mich.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Jersey City, N.J.; Louisville, Ky.; and Refugee Council USA.
